Once remembered as one of the pioneering stores in Zamboanga City that attracted shoppers, Shoppers’ Central is now merely a nostalgic memory of the past.

Three-Dimensional Model of Evangelista Building – Shoppers Central

Established in 1989, Shoppers Central was a supermarket and department store managed by Shoppers’ Group of Companies, formerly associated with Shoppers’ Chain of Stores Inc. Situated within the five-story Evangelista Building on Thomas Claudio Street in Zamboanga City, it serves as a prominent retail hub in the area.

The ground floor was home to the supermarket, where shoppers can also find The Generic Pharmacy. Previously, this floor also accommodated Mister Donut. Moving up from the ground floor, the second to fourth floors were exclusively dedicated to the department store, accessible via stairs and escalators throughout the building.

Shoppers Central prides itself on offering a wide range of products and services, catering to the diverse needs of local residents and visitors alike. With its convenient location and comprehensive retail offerings, it continues to be a favored destination for shoppers seeking quality goods in Zamboanga City.

When the news of Shoppers Central permanently closing its doors was first announced on January 29, it hit me hard as a passionate mall enthusiast. To me, Shoppers Central isn’t just a store; it’s a cherished cornerstone of our city’s shopping history, having been a vital part of our community for decades. Its closure feels like a significant loss to our community’s identity.

Before the emergence of large shopping malls like Mindpro, Yubenco, KCC, and SM, Shoppers Central stood as one of the pioneering stores in our city. It served as the primary destination for Zamboangueños, offering everything from groceries to stationery supplies, clothing, and appliances. Shoppers Central was truly a one-stop shop catering to the diverse needs and desires of our community.

Its presence was not merely about shopping; it was a hub where people gathered, socialized, and created memories. The closure of Shoppers Central marks the end of an era and serves as a poignant reminder of how retail landscapes evolve over time.

After months of bustling clearance sales and meticulous preparations, the anticipated day finally arrived. On February 28, 2024, Zamboanga City bid a heartfelt farewell to Shoppers Central, an esteemed and iconic store that had served as a steadfast anchor in our community for decades within the Evangelista Building.

With Shoppers Central closing its doors, the familiar landmark of the Evangelista Building now stands at a crossroads, preparing to embark on a new chapter under the management of Maker Sales Center. This transition signifies more than just a change in tenants; it represents a pivotal moment in our city’s commercial history. The building, once bustling with shoppers and brimming with goods from Shoppers Central, now awaits a rejuvenation that will redefine its role in Zamboanga’s vibrant commercial landscape.

As we reflect on the legacy of Shoppers Central and look ahead to the future with Maker Sales Center, we recognize the enduring impact of these changes on our community

I am thrilled to announce that I have successfully finished creating the three-dimensional model of the Evangelista Building. It has been a challenging yet rewarding endeavor, meticulously capturing the architectural details and essence of this iconic structure in Zamboanga City. Below, you can find the photo showcasing the culmination of my efforts in bringing this model to life.

While modeling Shoppers Central in SketchUp, I came across a striking architectural feature of the building that often goes unnoticed by many: its distinctive building skin. For those unfamiliar with architectural terminology, the building skin refers to the external finish that covers a building’s exterior, including walls, windows, and cladding. It serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing protection from the elements while enhancing the building’s appearance.

The building skin of Shoppers Central is particularly noteworthy. It incorporates diamond-shaped pieces arranged throughout the building’s sides, giving it an overall resemblance to a seashell. This intricate design detail adds a unique visual texture to the structure that may not be immediately apparent to casual observers.

During the process of creating a 3D model, I had the opportunity to closely observe and appreciate this remarkable architectural element. While it may not be widely recognized, the building skin serves not only as a protective layer against sunlight and weather but also contributes significantly to the building’s facade. It exemplifies how architectural innovation can blend functionality with aesthetic appeal, enriching the overall character of the built environment.
